The Flag of Niger
The flag of the Republic of Niger has three horizontal stripes – orange at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. Right in the center of the flag is an orange disc symbolising the sun, the eternal life-giver. The flag was adopted in 1959.
The flag colors and the distinctive central emblem hold deep significance for Niger. The orange band represents the Sahara Desert in the north of the country, the white band symbolizes purity and innocence, and the green band stands for the fertile regions in the south of Niger as well as hope and the country’s agricultural potential. The orange circle in the middle of the flag represents the sun and the progress.
Three Flags Similar to the Flag of Niger
There are three countries with flags similar to that of the Republic of Niger – India, Tajikistan and Hungary. Though all flags have the same basic style of three equal-sized horizontal stripes, the Indian flag is the closest to Niger flag in terms of design and colors.
However, the similarities end there. Not only are the stripes of different colors in these flags, the symbols and emblems, as well as the proportions are markedly different across the flags.
Though the middle stripe in all the flags is white, the top stripe is either of red or orange (saffron) color and the bottom-most stripe also varies from vibrant green to deep green color.
India Flag

The national flags of Niger and India share a similar design, each featuring three horizontal stripes with a central emblem. Niger’s flag has orange, white, and green stripes, symbolizing the Sahara, unity, and prosperity, respectively. And India’s flag has saffron, white, and green stripes, representing courage, purity, and growth, respectively. The central emblem in the flag of India is a navy blue colored wheel with 24 spokes while in the flag of Niger the central symbol is an orange disc which symbolises the sun.
Tajikistan Flag

Niger and Tajikistan share a tricolor design but with unique central emblems. The flag of Tajikistan has a much more fancy central emblem – the royal gold (yellow) crown adorned with seven stars – than the simple orange disc in the flag of Niger.
Hungary Flag

The flag of Hungary has three equal-sized horizontal stripes of red, white, green. However, the shades of the colors are quite different from those in the flag of Niger. Additionally, there is no central symbol in the Hungarian flag and the proportions of the two flags are markedly different.
Flag design & style: Three horizontal stripes and emblem in the center
All flags have a common design that consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors of red/orange (saffron), white, and green. The differences in the tints and shades of these colors as well as the proportion of the flags make them distinct from each other. Notably, the flags of India, Tajikistan and Hungary are wider than the the flag of Niger, which is almost a square with a 6:7 height-width ratio. Furthermore, the Niger flag stands out with an orange disc at the center, whereas the flags of India and Tajikistan have Ashoka chakra and a crown with seven stars, respectively.
