The month of August originated from the Roman calendar and is named after the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar. Prior to his reign, the month was known as Sextilis in Latin, which means “sixth month,” as it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. It was later changed to August by the Emperor Augustus, and he named it after himself.
