Grand Union Flag and Flag of British East India Company
  • The first flag was the United States flag known as the Grand Union Flag was modelled after the flag of the British East India Company which had 13 stripes and the British flag in the canton.
  • The first flag of the United States, the Grand Union Flag, had no stars. Instead the British flag appeared in the canton.

  • The present day fag was designed by 17-year-old Robert G. Heft in 1958. It was for a school project for which he receive a B- grade. When his design was accepted as the national flag, the grade was pumped up to A.
  • The 13 red and white stripes in the flag represent the original 13 colonies that came together to form the United States.
  • The blue rectangle with the 50 stars (canton) in the US flag is known as the Union.
  • The 50 stars in the US flag represent the 50 states that make up the United States.
  • A new star (representing a state) is only added on the 4th of July – the US Independence Day.

  • The term “Old Glory” was used by William Driver way back in 1831.
